This copy has been kept in beautiful condition by its original slipcase, which is complete and attractive, with a little rubbing to the edges. The vellum and gilt are positively gleaming, there is a very light patch of spotting to the fore edge of the upper cover. An exceptional copy. Pictorial endpapers illustrated in black silhouettes and gold designs. There are also a number of black and white drawings, chapter headings and decorative borders.
His illustrations are very striking, leaving a lasting impression, and combined with the luxury of the book's production form a breathtaking result. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 24 plates with printed tissue-guards.
First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the ilustrator on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To Miss Bernadine Murphy with my kindest regards, Kay Nielsen, April ". Also with a one-page autograph letter signed by Nielsen to the book's owner and dated October 10, Nielsen thanks Murphy for what seems to have been her attempt to find him work as an art teacher. It would have been wonderful if such arrangements could have been made - but already at that time we were about to leave", as he and his wife had been "trying to arrange our return to Denmark to join Ulla's mother.
